Apple may finally do away with the physical Home key on its next iPad

The press invites sent out by Apple yesterday bear a number of clues as to what the March 7 announcement will be all about. Some hit you right in the face, others are more subtle. But there’s something missing in that photo, and it seems to confirm some old rumors about the future of Apple’s iDevices.

Speculation about Apple dropping the Home button originally began with the iPhone a couple of years ago. Later, it moved on to the iPad, and now Apple’s invitations to the March 7 event in San Francisco seem to confirm it.

The image clearly shows a smooth black bezel on a tablet device that appears to be in portrait mode, given the spacing between the icons in the dock. Not that those icons couldn’t be on the far left of the dock, or that the device is simply held upside down, but that’s no way to dupe your fans, now is it?
