Yesterday Apple launched iTunes 10.1.2, an update to its proprietary digital media player application used for playing and organizing music, video, and iOS applications.

The release notes posted by the company on its Support website indicate that iTunes 10.1.2 is a mere maintenance update which improves syncing with iOS 4.2 devices, and delivers AirPlay “to instantly and wirelessly stream videos from iTunes to the all-new Apple TV.”

However, the full-length changelog for this new version of iTunes (included with the actual download) reveal that the software is required to sync stuff to new-breed iPhone 4 units launching next month on Verizon’s CDMA network.

It is known that iPhone 4 CDMA model devices use an updated version of the iPhone operating system - iOS 4.2.5, therefore iTunes 10.1.2 is officially the first version to support the latest iOS.

Current-generation GSM handsets running on AT&T’s network are at iOS 4.2.1, as the latest version.

What's new in iTunes 10.1.2

iTunes 10.1.2 syncs music, movies, and more with iPhone 4 (CDMA model) and provides a number of important stability and performance improvements.

iTunes 10.1 came with several new features and improvements, including:

• Use AirPlay to instantly and wirelessly stream videos from iTunes to the all-new Apple TV.

• Sync with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 4.2.

According to the less detailed changelog on Apple’s Support site, there’s also a security side to this update, yet Apple fails to document the patches via the provided link.

iTunes 10.1.2 still works with PowerPC G5 or G4 processor, according to the detailed documentation, but a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor is required to play HD video, or use iTunes Extras from the iTunes Store.

Users should also pack at least 512MB of RAM and Mac OS X version 10.5 or later for good functionality.
