Macs are just not as secure as they used to be

Unknown to many Windows fanboys, Macs have carved out a pretty big niche for themselves in the enterprise market, with 76% (up from 71%) of businesses now using Macs in a way or another, as a recent Avecto study has revealed.

Surveying over 100 CIOs (Chief Information Officers) and 1,000 employees, Avecto is highlighting the fact that, in spite of the growing usage numbers, business confidence in Mac's security features has gone down over the last year.

To blame is the increased amount of malware targeting Macs, which has seen a rise after the infamous WireLurker campaign from last year. 40% of the surveyed CIOs say that WireLurker has shaken their confidence in Macs.

Nevertheless, 28% of the survey takers also admit they consider Macs much safer than Windows, compared to 18% who said the opposite.

"For too long there has been a false belief and a naivety that Macs are inherently securer than Windows PCs. But either way organizations must view them like any other device: an endpoint that can be exploited," says Paul Kenyon, VP at Avecto.

Taking into account that 19% of business devices used daily are Macs and that 36% of businesses claim their Mac estate has increased, this leaves companies with a pretty significant portion of their IT infrastructure open to attack if proper measures are not taken.

Below is an infographic based on the Avecto survey data.
