W10M will be rolled out in batches starting early 2016

We’ve recently learned that Windows 10 Mobile has been delayed and Windows Phone devices will only get the upgrade in early 2016, instead of December 2015, but now we have more information regarding the models that will first receive the new OS.

As my colleague Cosmin Vasile told you when revealing the Windows 10 Mobile device upgrade list, the new operating system will be rolled out in batches, which means that not all Windows Phone handsets will receive the new tidbits at the same time.

Specifically, only five different Lumia phones will be allowed to download and install Windows 10 Mobile in the first batch, as follows: Lumia 1520, 830, 930, 640 (all variations), and 640 XL. Additionally, Lumia 950 XL is also placed on this list, but this will obviously be just an OS update, as the device already ships with Windows 10 Mobile.

The first batch of phones to get the new OS also includes some non-Lumia devices, among which the HTC One M8 for Windows.

Flagships to get it first

Earlier this year, Microsoft revealed that Lumia 640 and 640 XL would be the first to get the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, and if the list is real, this is indeed the case. Along with these two models, Microsoft is also planning to upgrade its previous flagships to Windows 10 Mobile as part of the first patch, which more or less puts an end to rumors that Lumia 930 might not be part of the first wave.

Obviously, Microsoft’s trying to first upgrade its most popular phones and only then release W10M for the rest of devices, including low-end models that could only get the new OS later in 2016.

For the moment, it’s not yet clear when Microsoft plans to start the rollout, and “early 2016” is the closest we can get right now, so expect more information to be provided in January.
