2K Games has seemingly made some big changes to its upcoming XCOM title, as it is no longer an exclusive game for the Xbox 360 and won't be ready until next year.

XCOM was presented to the world last year as a gritty first-person shooter re-imagining, and managed to raise some serious doubts from many longtime fans of the original XCOM games, which were strategy-oriented.

Now, it seems that 2K Games, its publisher, alongside 2K Marin, its developer, have made a few changes, with the most important being the fact that it will appear not just on the Xbox 360, like it was planned up until now, but also on the PC and PlayStation 3 platforms.

It also seems that 2K doesn't want to emphasize the fact that the game is a first-person shooter, instead describing it as "a gripping tactical action experience set in mid-century America, where the player leads an elite field team of specialised government agents into battle – combining deep, visceral gunplay with powerful sci-fi abilities. Together, they face a vicious and otherworldly enemy, who conspires to shatter our world and rebuild it in their own image."

XCOM became a cult hit back in the 1990s, amazing players with its strategic gameplay and interesting story, which saw them guide Earth's special forces in front of an enemy attack.

The new game, at least from its first trailer last year, showed that players will now be on the ground, leading the charge against the aliens.

“Every time I think of XCOM it gives me the chills, the kind that come from standing witness to the corruption and destruction of your world as you stand powerless to prevent it,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “I’m pleased to announce today that we will be bringing this experience to an even broader audience when XCOM comes to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in March 2012.”

XCOM will see players take on the role of Special Agent William Carter, who, alongside his team, need to attack the aliens, capture their technology and turn it against them in order to protect the US and the world.

A new trailer was also released by the company, showing off some rather abstract gameplay, which you can check out below.
