World of Warcraft Is Running Out of Challengers

Blizzard might have shattered the MMO market when it released its World of Warcraft, but you know things are really going downhill when the competition is calmly admitting defeat. NCsoft might have tried to shake things up a bit with its Aion: Tower of Eternity, but didn't cause nearly enough of a stir to pose any serious threats. And now it looks like developers working to release a new MMO don't even dare think of anything nearly as impetuous.

With a game release date coming in just under a week, Cryptic might be working hard to get its Star Trek Online out the door, but it doesn't have very high expectations for it. “No game will topple World of Warcraft,” Jack Emmert, the COO of Cryptic Studios, said. “Many companies try to replicate Warcraft’s gameplay, but that’s just silly. If someone wants WoW, they’ll play WoW.”

Funcom is also pretty knowledgeable in the business, with its Age of Conan and the upcoming Secret World, but, unfortunately, even it had to admit the reality. The developer's Director of Communications, Erling Ellingsen, admitted that, “The game has proven to be incredibly resilient against the test of time, not only because it’s a great game but also because it’s turned into somewhat of a pop-cultural phenomenon.” He further explained that, “Predicting success or failure in the MMO segment is dangerous, but I think it’s safe to say that World of Warcraft will be around for a long time. Based on the numbers reported by Blizzard so far, it will probably take a while before their subscriber level falls significantly.”

And while the past is set in stone, Jagex, the developer of RuneScape, doesn't see a democratic future for online gaming, with WoW ruling the market with an iron fist. “2010 will see the release of a number of hardcore space and science fiction MMOs such as Star Wars and Star Trek Online,” Rob Smith, Jagex's COO, said. “These games are unlikely to topple the likes of World of Warcraft from their throne, at least in the short term.” And, like that wasn't enough of a dominion for Blizzard's MMORPG, the developer is planing to release another expansion pack, with an entirely remodeled Azeroth, two new playable races, cross-race combination of classes and many other changes, so it doesn't look like the game will lose fans any time soon.

I have to correct a tatement by the author. STO never admitted defeat. They made the statement of "we are not concerned with beating out WoW. We made a game wholly different and tailored to another audience. We wanted to make STO true to the series it is based on. I also beg to differ on the authors assessment of Cryptics hopes for STO. Their expectations are quite high proven by their unwavering diligence on game improvements during beta. I honestly think the author underestimates the amount of "trekkies" out there that will flock to STO, even those currently playing WoW.
Now, on the other hand, WoW will be around for a good long time, it's perfect for a younger audience or for people with short attention spans. The game is over easy to play and learn, caters to the 24 hour a day player and the various latch key kids and desktop warriors out there (hence the name world or warcrack). Why else would the majority of the mature adult audience have left? Blizzard has sketchy customer service at best, but why do they really need it when the game itself is now relatively bug free. Oh, and please, WoW might try and bill itself as and mmorpg but it is more of an mmo, the term role play is lost on todays youth.
In short I find it hard to believe that anyone out there cares about toppling WoW from it's self proclaimed throne. Cryptic, Funcom, Jagex or any other developer is more concerned with getting out their own quality game to their target audience than to waste time worrying about Blizzard.
I hope the author finds this enlightening. It's sad when I see an editor showing such one sided bias towards a game (the one they obviously play). Had I not stumbled upon this article I would have left well enough alone. Next article I hope the author takes the time to more liberal and states the pros and cons of each title to better inform the reader. Unfortunately seeing bias like that does not make me want to invest more time than I have with this site. It presents a poor image at the outset.

Thank you

You know what I hate about all these developers? NONE of them have listened to revolutionary ideas put forth by players. Plus ALL of them have shown contempt and dismissive attitude towards players regarding sex and nudity in their potential MMO games. THIS IS WHY THEY FAIL. BECAUSE THEY ARE SO BIASED AND STUPID THEY couldn't save their own lives. They are far too conservative and stupid. They do NOT have grand thinking and are UNCREATIVE, UNIMAGINATIVE hacks.
