Redmond-based software giant Microsoft is expected to provide users of Windows Phone 7 devices with a software update in the near future, and some more info on the matter emerged.

Apparently, the upcoming software will make a full backup of the handset on the desktop PC before starting the actual update process.

As soon as the update was completed, the user data, including personal files and settings, will be restored to the device, so that one could continue using the handset just as before.

This feature is expected to prove quite handy at times when a rollback of the update is needed. Moreover, it might also enable users to restore a previous save point/backup, provided that there are issues with the handset.

The info on this backup and restore feature the Microsoft is preparing for the said Windows Phone 7 update was delivered in a Windows Phone Radio Podcast by Matt Akers, as this post on forums.whirlpool.net.au notes (via WMPoweruser).

Here's what he says: “any time that we prepare to do an update, which you guys will see soon, we will make a backup of your phone. The entire phone, everything on it.”

The update will be made through the Zune software on the desktop, and the backup and restore of data, settings and the like will be conditioned by this application too.

Microsoft announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January that it would release the first software update for Windows Phone 7 in the coming months, and we'll learn more on how it works at that time.

In the meantime, however, you can have a look at the video embedded below, courtesy of WinRumors, where the feature is explained.

In addition to the aforementioned software update, Microsoft is expected to provide Windows Phone 7 users with another update during the ongoing year, delivering more features and expanding the capabilities of their devices even more than before.
