Sony strikes gold with their new download service

Sony makes a second attempt at offering the public downloadable content, just a few days after closing up the Connect online music store. It seems a logical decision considering that the PS3 and PSP could take advantage of such a service, increasing their popularity and turning them into multimedia consoles.

Also, the above-mentioned consoles are already used online and the owners of these devices are accustomed to online stores or portals like the PSN or Playstation Store. The PSP will take full advantage of this feature, with its 30 million units sold till now, becoming a serious threat to the famous video iPods, including the iPhone. Imagine that you'll be able to download the latest blockbuster movie (paying for it, of course) on your slim PSP, connecting it to your big screen TV and inviting the friends over for a popcorn movie night.

There are certain flaws in this seemingly utopian process, like the lack of storage space on Sony's portable console. It could be solved easily with the release of a PSP-compatible 8GB memory card, but we'll have to wait at least a couple of months till we get one. However, this console has its advantages, specially the 4.3 inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, even better than the acclaimed iPhone.

The PS3 is not to be neglected, as Sony's latest console is about to reach 5 million sold units worldwide and it would be a pity to waste the gaming device's potential. TV shows like "Heroes", "Lost" or "Prison Break" will generate millions of downloads once they will be made available and stuffing your PS3 hard drive with episodes from the acclaimed series seems a logical move, if you're a true fan. The problem is once again the storage space, but we'll do with the 60 or 80GB that the PS3 has to offer.

Let's just hope that Sony's movie download service will be more successful than iTunes' former rival, Connect.
