The Desert Rangers closely resemble the characters in New Vegas

inXile has released the first image linked to Wasteland 2 in order to mark the official start of the game development process for the old school role-playing title.

The game is being created with the money that fans have directed to the project via the Kickstarter service in the last few weeks.

The image shows an artist's impression of the Desert Rangers, created by Andree Wallin.

A close look at the concept art shows a number of possible characters that seem pretty similar to the aesthetics that Obsidian used when they  made Fallout: New Vegas, the most recent title with a post-apocalyptic theme published by Bethesda.

The connection to Fallout: New Vegas is important because the team at the studio has confirmed that it will lend a hand with the Wasteland 2 project, with leading designer Chris Avellone ready to work closely with Brian Fargo in order to develop the core game concepts and the story.

Obsidian previously announced that it would get involved with both tools and manpower if the Kickstarter project got more than 2.1 million dollars (1.6 million Euro) in funding from fans.

At the moment the Wasteland 2 funding drive has managed to raise more than 2.2 million dollars (1.67 million Euro) and it has another 7 days to go before the Kickstarter project ends and the final sum is announced.

The current amount of money gathered will guarantee that the game gets versions for both the Mac and Linux and might also lead to more complex game assets.

Fargo has repeatedly stated that Wasteland 2 will be created with a PC gaming crowd in mind and that he will make no effort to appeal to those who have been introduced to post-apocalyptic game concepts by the modern Fallout titles from Bethesda.

Wasteland 2 is set to use old school role-playing mechanics and will be launched in 2013.
