Reports say that this has been in the works for quite a while but, until now, it’s was just pure speculation. Don Cheadle is now confirming that a spinoff with War Machine is in the making.

As Film Shaft points out, War Machine will be stepping out of the “Iron Man” universe – which is not to say he’ll be leaving it for good – and into his own film.

Just like was the initial plan with Wolverine and Deadpool, War Machine will use the Iron Man launching pad to kick start his own franchise.

Moreover, even though details on this remain sketchy and no official confirmation has come from Marvel, Cheadle says the project is a go – and work on the script is well under way.

“Yeah they’re developing it now, they’re working on that. They’ve, er, I think they’ve hired a writer and so, you know, we’ll see how it goes. It’d be a lot of fun,” Cheadle said in a recent interview cited by Film Shaft.

In the same interview, Cheadle also said that War Machine will probably not be included in the upcoming “Avengers” film, describing his character as more of a “lone wolf” than a team player.

As for Jon Favreau’s departure from the “Iron Man” franchise, which was announced late in 2010, Cheadle can’t really offer too much insight into that because he hasn’t been keeping up to speed with all the details.

“You know, people move on for various reasons and John’s very busy, he’s gonna do Cowboys and Aliens and he’s got a ton of other projects on the slate so he’s, he’s fine. I don’t know actually what happened, I’m kinda out of that loop,” the actor said.

From this, Slash Film points out that, with all the major characters tied to studios for at least another sequel, spinoffs could be the way to go for superhero movies in 2011 and the following years.
