A free resource available for download from Microsoft is designed to streamline the deployment of Visual Studio 2010 RTM Team Foundation as much as possible. Customers leveraging the latest release of the Redmond company’s development platform can now grab the Team Foundation Installation Guide for Visual Studio 2010 from the Microsoft Download Center. Delivered as a Microsoft Compiled HTML Help file (.chm), the guide might require unblocking before access to the content will be permitted. All that users need to do is right click the file after they download it and save it locally, select Properties, then click on Unblock option toward the bottom, and then hit Apply.

“You can install Visual Studio Team Foundation Server with the least amount of preliminary work by using the basic configuration. On most operating systems, the installation wizard installs and configures Internet Information Services,” Microsoft informs. “You can use SQL Server Express, which is included with the installation files for Team Foundation Server, or you can use an existing instance of SQL Server.”

“You cannot configure reporting or a team project portal if you use the basic configuration. However, you can track bugs, tasks, and other work items; you can put files under version control; and you can access information by using Team Web Access. If you are installing Team Foundation Server on a server operating system, you can always add reporting or a team project portal after you have installed Team Foundation Server,” the company added.

The Team Foundation Installation Guide for Visual Studio 2010 covers a variety of deployment scenarios. Essentially, developers working with Visual Studio 2010 Team Foundation will be able to take advantage of the guide in order to not only install the solution but also perform additional tasks. According to Microsoft, the following scenarios are detailed in the guide: “Installing Team Foundation Server on a Single-Server; Installing Team Foundation Server Using Existing Infrastructure or More than One Server; Installing a Team Foundation Server Farm (High Availability); Upgrading Team Foundation Server; Installing Team Foundation Build Service; and Installing Team Foundation Proxy.”

“Before you use the installation guide for Team Foundation, you should identify the scenario that most closely matches the type of installation that you are trying to perform. For each scenario, the installation guide contains an overview and a checklist. The overviews provide the high-level goals of the scenario, and the checklists provide the context with which you should perform individual tasks. You should review the overview for the type of installation that you want to perform, and then you should use the checklist to install components of Team Foundation,” the Redmond company added.
