ViewSonic did say, on previous occasions, that it would focus on LED backlighting from now on, and the latest reports regarding its plans for this segment have now emerged.

Before LED backlighting began to be experimented with, CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lights) were the norm.

Then again, to a certain extent, they still are the norm, although the situation is on a fast track towards fundamentally changing.

The fact that LED delivers not just a higher image quality but a massive improvement to power efficiency is one reason.

The other reason is that this newer technology has reached the point where the price gap between it and CCFL is almost nonexistent.

Mainstream monitors have almost no price distinction, although 27-inch and bigger monitors or HDTVs do sell for some 5% to 10% more.

Still, this did not stop LED panels, in Taiwan at least, from securing 48% if all panels, or from being expected to jump to 60% by the end of the ongoing year (2011).

By extension, this means that display suppliers with a special liking for LED will have much to rejoice over come 2012.

ViewSonic is one of those companies and, according to reports, will keep its efforts active to transition from CCFL.

Already, on a worldwide basis, LED accounts for 80% of its total LCD (liquid crystal display) shipments.

By the end of the year, it hopes to succeed in shipping 350,000 panels in Taiwan, grabbing a 20% share and, with it, the leading position. Worldwide, this figure corresponds to 5-10% of the LCD industry.

Users that would like to know what they can expect from a ViewSonic product can take a short or longer look at such items as the V3D245wm-LED 3D monitor or this more unassuming trio. Needless to say, the future will bring more of them to choose from.
