HTC HD2, the most appealing Windows Mobile-based handset brought to the market last year, has just got a taste of Windows Phone 7, the latest mobile operating system the Redmond-based software giant Microsoft launched on the market last month. This is not an official upgrade for the high-end device, though it should prove that such a solution would be possible.

The videos below supposedly shows the HTC HD2 running under Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system, even if the company announced officially a while ago that the smartphone won't offer support for the new OS version.

It appears that some enthusiasts already managed to come up with a full Windows Phone 7 port for HTC HD2, and that most of the handset's functions are working well.

While no application is shown in the first video below, we still can see that the multitouch pinch-to-zoom feature is working.

As for the second clip, it shows various Windows Phone 7 functions demonstrated on HD2 and on Surround, including Office, Zune, and more.

Both videos were published by the guys over at XDA.cn (via Engadget).

We should mention, however, that HTC and Microsoft announced in early 2010 that HD2 won't receive an update to the new Windows Phone 7 operating system.

The main reason for this decision seemed to have been the fact that HD2 comes with more buttons on the front than what Windows Phone 7 needs.

Even so, the handset sports high-end hardware specs, in line with what the already launched Windows Phone 7 device pack inside, and it would be able to handle the new platform pretty well.

There are little chances that Microsoft and HTC would come up with an official Windows Phone 7 update for the HD2.

However, it appears that those interested in putting the platform on the older device would be able to do so via unofficial software, provided that one would be released into the wild in the near future. Stay tuned for more.
