VMware Fusion, another powerful, yet costly virtualization app for Mac OS X, has received an important update lately, fixing critical bugs, while adding experimental support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server. VMWare Fusion 2.0.4 (Build 159196) is available for immediate download right here on our web site.

Although Fusion has reached version 2.0.4, the kind folks at VMware are lagging behind with the changelog. According to the latest release notes, VMware Fusion resolves an issue where driverless printing stopped working for users that ran Mac OS X 10.5.6, and installed Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2009-001. As the code-savvy individuals at the VMware labs indicate, the shared printers would disappear from Windows and, if the user has configured their printer differently as a workaround, they must now turn on the driverless printing feature again by clicking Virtual Machine > Settings, selecting Printers, and selecting the Enabled check box.

Also revealed in the changelog is that the latest version of the powerful virtualization app provides experimental support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server as a guest operating system, a feature also mentioned with the release of VMware Fusion 2.0.3, thus enhancements are likely present with the current release. According to VMware, “you can now run the current Snow Leopard Server builds (32-bit kernel) in a virtual machine.” Last, but not least, Fusion 2.0.4 resolves an issue with driverless printing, where the Enabled check box on Virtual Machine > Settings > Printers might get deselected automatically.

VMware Fusion allows Intel Macs to run x86 operating systems, like Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris, in a virtual machine, at the same time as Mac OS X. VMware Fusion runs Windows inside a secure and isolated virtual machine. VMware ships with a 12-month complimentary subscription to McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 antivirus. The software is comparable with Parallels Desktop, another virtualization solution from the folks at Parallels. This review offers a detailed look at both virtualization solutions.
