Nominations for the 2010 VMAs bring a new record for Lady Gaga: 13 nominations, the most for a single artist in a single year

Almost a year ago, Kanye West got up on the stage as Taylor Swift was about to accept her award for Best Female Video and uttered the now (in)famous words “Imma let you finish but…” September brings another edition of the MTV awards ceremony celebrating the best of the best in music videos but, hopefully, this year won’t come with such an embarrassing interruption.

As E! Online puts it, those who believe Lady Gaga may be overexposed and overhyped may as well look for something else to do on September 12 because she’s just set an entirely new record: that for the most nominations for a single artist in a single year. In short, Gaga scored 13 nods for this year’s awards ceremony, including for Best Female Video and Video of the Year, the latter being the most coveted moonman of them all. Hot on her heels is another artist that burned up the charts this year, Eminem, with his “Recovery” album, which also happens to be the best-selling debut of 2010.

“Nipping at [Gaga’s] ridiculously high and balance-threatening heels is Eminem, whose collaboration-heavy comeback album Recovery earned him a second-best eight. Also scoring noms were Gaga accomplice Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Drake, Ke$ha, Jay-Z, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys (and new hubby Swizz Beatz!), Usher, Pink, Rihanna, Jason Derulo, Coldplay and Taylor Swift,” E! Online writes. One thing that fans may expect is for MTV to do its best to bring Swift and Kanye together again, though not for the purpose of recreating last year’s awkward moment.

“No doubt MTV’s first piece of business will be to do their predictable best to reunite the teen dream with her interrupting adversary at some point during the night. After all, they know a watercooler-worthy copresenter pairing when they hear it. As for those boasting the honor of record-breaking nominations, Gaga’s haul included kudos for Best Pop Video, Best Dance Music Video, Best Female Video and Best Choreography for ‘Bad Romance,’ along with a Best Collaboration nod for her Beyonce-assisted ‘Telephone.’ As it happens, her toughest competition may prove to be herself, since both of her nominated videos will go head-to-head in the Best Choreography and Video of the Year categories,” E! further notes about the nominations.

The Video Music Awards 2010 airs live on MTV on September 12 at 9:00 p.m ET. Until then, check out the entire list of nominations below and stay tuned here for more.
