Google has released a new version of its mobile application for iOS devices renaming it to Google Search. The newly-updated app boasts a new user interface with improved fast app-switching support, the ability to swipe right to make your search more specific, or swipe down to access settings and log in to Google, an updated help screen, Goggles support for iPod touch and iPhone 3G, and more.

According to Alastair Tse, software engineer and Robert Hamilton, product manager, those who need to do a Google search on their iPhone or iPod touch can now get results much faster, thanks to the redesigned Google Search app.

Formerly named Google Mobile App, the software now offers more ways to interact with its interface.

“When browsing through search results or looking at a webpage, you can swipe down to see the search bar or change your settings,” Tse explains.

An Apps button at the bottom of the screen allows for easy access to the mobile versions of Google’s various offerings for those who use Google apps.

A new toolbar is there to facilitate filtering results. Users can bring it up by swiping from left to right. To view images, a dedicated control is there too.

“Second, we’ve made it easier to pick up searching where you left off,” Tse continues.

The software engineer elaborates, saying that “If you leave the app and come back later, you’ll be able either to start a new search right away (just tap in the search box to type, hit the microphone button to do a voice search or tap on the camera icon to use Google Goggles) or get back to exactly where you were by tapping on the lower part of the page.”

Lastly, Google Search version 0.8.0.6023 incorporates improvements to existing elements like the popular Google Goggles function, Voice Search, Search with My Location, and Gmail unread counts.

A built-in helper is also available to enable newcomers to pick up on the updated application and start using its cool features in minutes.
