Amazed of the engine's capabilities, Ed Boon decided to use it

Epic's Unreal Engine is yet another game's foundation and this time we're talking about Mortal Kombat. Ed Boon made it official that MK8 is on its way and, although it's not in a playable stage of development yet, it will benefit "visually" from Unreal Engine. The engine was also used by Epic in creating Gears of War (a marvelous piece of work by the way), game that gave Boon the idea to start working on the eighth game of the MK series using the graphics engine from Epic. After taking a look at Gears of War, Boon was left breathless by the visuals of the game and that was the moment he knew exactly what he wanted from his next MK.

As soon as he decided on the next course of action, he told GameInformer about it and the word was out. He was quite brief about it as little time had passed between the beginning of works on the game and the time of the interview, but Boon assures that the game will be done with a completely new approach. No more simple punches and kicks as before and everything will be gradually improved from the base to the top: "We're not going to have three fighting styles, we're not going to have the same punches and kicks and the same kind of control scheme. Everything is getting trashed. We're reinventing everything from the ground up."

We all know what a frenzy Mortal Kombat was when it first appeared. It was pretty innovative and realistic for its time and Mortal Kombat II was the first arcade game to use William's DCS sound system.

Boon and Tobias never let MK fans down, every MK game looking better than the last and being a fan myself, I have to say it's the game I've been waiting for a long time. I can't wait to see the new fatalities or what secret characters emerge. Boon said it won't be out until 2008.
