Twisted Metal might not be as big today as it was in the days of the original PlayStation and its follow-up, but the creators of the series believe that modern gamers will be attracted to the chaos and destruction that is one of the hallmarks of the franchise.

Speaking to Giantbomb at the recent PAX event David Jaffe, who is the main developer working on Twisted Metal at studio Eat Sleep Play, has said, “A lot of people look at Twisted Metal, and they really just look at the surface. They see the chaos and the destruction, and that’s what we’ve always called the shallow end of the pool.”

He added, “We wanna get people in with the chaos, but there really is so much depth that we’ve built in.”

The game creator talked about two characters: Shadow, who has a weapon that gains power when it is fired from a long range, and Axle, who has an enhanced jumping ability that allows him to avoid certain areas and take shortcuts around the levels.

The developer says that the team working on Twisted Metal has built a lot of variety into the game in order to give each fan a chance to find a combination they like and then master it.

Skilled players will be able to construct complex strategies and plans based on abilities and team work while novice gamers will be able to still do well as long as they take the time needed to learn about their characters.

Twisted Metal will support 4 player split screen gaming and allow up to 15 gamers to join in when the game is taken online.

Twisted Metal will be published by Sony and is launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 home gaming console, with the launch date being fixed for February 14, 2012 after a recent delay.
