Android developers rejoice as Twilio has just made their Android client available for download. With Twilio for Android, developers will be able to add VoIP capabilities to their applications.

Basically, this Twilio client is an SDK for Android that provides devs with the possibility to include a voice component to their software applications.

Although the creators of the application initially launched the iOS SDK, the release of the Android SDK helps Twilio reach no less than 75% of worldwide smartphones.

Twilio has been packed with important features that make creating apps with integrated communications features much easier for devs.

For example, the SDK for Android includes “Real-time Presence,” which allows devs to create buddy lists into any app, thus allowing users to know who is online.

Twilio is capable of notifying a user when one of his/her buddies is ready for voice chat so that calls are only made when users are online.

Furthermore, the App Backgrounding allows the SDK to receive voice calls even if the app is not the current one being used.

Basically, users can do other tasks, like watching a video, playing a game or read an email and then switch to their communication app as soon as a call comes in.

Obviously, it is important to note that the application features cross-platform interoperability, as it supports both Android and iOS, along with their web browsers. This means that apps can make calls between any of the two platforms without any issues.

There’s more to it, as the Twilio platform also enables bridging VoIP calls with traditional phone calls. Check it out here.

With the launch of Twilio Client for Android, we now support the vast majority of smartphones globally. With this many developers and our proven success on iOS, we know we'll see some incredible and innovative cross-platform communication apps in the months to come,” said Thomas Schiavone, director of Product Management for Twilio.
