As is tradition by now, the nominations for the Razzie Awards have just been announced, one day before noms for the Academy Awards are made public. Unlike the Oscars, though, the Razzies “celebrate” critical underachievement, sometimes even with those productions who fare incredibly well with the audiences. Case in point, Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” which got no less than 7 nods in the major categories, as a post on the official webpage of the Razzies duly informs.

“Transformers 2” is not the biggest loser, though, at least as far as nominations as concerned, since “Land of the Lost” also got the same amount of nods, also in major categories, which literally makes it an equally strong contender. Notably absent from nominations, though, is the critically panned but much loved by audiences “New Moon,” the sequel to 2008’s “The Twilight Saga.” Organizers explained this by saying that, despite speculation that “New Moon” would rival “Transformers” at the Razzies, it just wasn’t bad enough. Plus, had they expanded the list to 10 nominations, it would have stood a chance, since it ranked sixth with them.

“Razzie Repeat Offender Michael Bay helped lead the over-loud, over-long, uber-stupid Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to a huge box office take... and to a huge haul of Razzie nominations as well. In addition to Worst Director and Worst Picture, the film is up for Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actress (Julie White as the stoned, screaming mother of Shia LeBouf), Worst Screen Couple (LeBouf and EITHER Megan Fox OR Any Transformer) and Worst Actress (Fox again, dually nominated for this film and Jennifer’s Body),” reads the official Razzie announcement.

“Transformers” (aka “The Trannies, Too”) has a very strong rival in “Land of the Lost,” as noted above. “Keeping up with Trannies, Too in the Razzie race (but decidedly not at the box office) is Last Summer’s Biggest B.O. bomb, Land of the Lost, also with 7 shots at taking home spray-painted gold. Lost star Will Ferrell is listed in both Worst Actor and Worst Screen Couple (Ferrell & Any Co-Star, Creature or “Comic Riff”) and the film itself is also nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel and Worst Supporting Actor (the screaching Jorma Taccone as the monkeylike Cha-Ka),” the announcement goes to say.

The Razzies were set up in 1980 by John Wilson, as a response to the Academy Awards, which is why the ceremony always takes place one day before the Oscars, with the same rule applying for the nominations as well. “Winners” will be announced on March 6, so keep an eye on this space for that; meanwhile, check out below the full list of nominees.
