When making any sort of new product, companies do their best to put in some feature that can make it stand out from the rest, and Transcend figured it may as well play with the design a bit when it put together its newest flash drive.

Over the past week, most consumer attention has been focused on the Mobile World Congress 2011 expo, so the news has largely consisted of tablets and smartphones.

This means that, with some exceptions, releases of any other sorts of hardware were minimal at best and nonexistent at worst.

Still, with the event more or less over, things like storage devices have begun to trickle out again, like Toshiba's STOR.E ART 4 portable hard disk drives (HDDs).

Now, Transcend has also come forth with a storage unit announcement, although its own product is more portable, being of the flash drive variety.

It goes by the name of JetFlash 560 and is described as featuring “a simple yet exquisite design with easy-to-use retractable USB connector, offering a touch of urban sophistication as well as ultimate convenience.”

It measures 45.2 x 23 x 8.5 mm, communicates with the host PC via the USB 2.0 interface and weighs a total of just 7 grams.

For those that want more numbers, data is read at about 18 MB/s, while writing tasks are accomplished at up to 10 MB/s.

As for the frame itself, it utilizes a silver-tone metallic case and a black-and-white checkerboard pattern.

“In addition to its eye-catching exterior design, the JetFlash 560 also features a handy push-out USB connector,” says the announcement.

“With a simple flick of the thumb, users can effortlessly extend and retract the connector for easy one-handed operation.”

Transcend should already have the newcomer up for sale, at prices of $15 (4 GB), $12 (8 GB) and $41 (16 GB).
