CD Projekt, the parent company of The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, has revealed the sales figures of the role playing game franchise from last year, confirming that over 1 million copies of The Witcher 2 were sold.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings appeared in May, 2011, on the PC and is currently getting ready for a re-release on that platform as well as for its debut on the Xbox 360, in the form of The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition.

Until April, when the Enhanced Edition is released, CD Projekt has revealed some interesting sales figures for the series as a whole from 2011.

According to the Polish company, over 1.1 million copies of The Witcher 2 were sold and 270,000 of them were bought via digital distribution services like Steam or Good Old Games.

CD Projekt Red studio head Adam Badowski highlighted that The Witcher 2 became a success not just in terms of sales but also in terms of popularity, saying that, "We were all incredibly surprised by the number of copies sold. The Witcher 2 has garnered over 60 industry awards, and gamers seem to love it."

Surprisingly enough, The Witcher 1, the first game in the series that was released originally back in 2007, managed to sell over 400,000 copies last year, impressing even CD Projekt Red, which didn’t expect such a surge in popularity.

"I have to admit, though, that the sales results for The Witcher, 5 years on from the game's premier, are remarkable,” Badowski said. “If anything, they prove that the content we put into our games ages well. I think that The Witcher will continue to generate buzz in the coming years.”

CD Projekt is expecting sales to increase by a large margin in April, when the Enhanced Edition is out for the PC and Xbox 360. After that, the company has confirmed that it has several projects in development, some designed for next generation consoles.
