The Witcher 2 might be the most important role-playing game of the year, but some players might never get to see all the beautiful gaming that the CD Projekt RED title delivers because they are put off by the rather tough battles they will have to get through early on.

I detailed my own issues with the combat difficulty in this diary for the game, but the developers who worked on The Witcher 2 are standing by their choices when it comes to the difficulty levels of the game.

Speaking to Eurogamer Tomasz Gop, who is the senior producer at CD Projekt RED working on The Witcher 2, said, “Obviously we have been inspired by hardcore games, by difficult games, and maybe that might be the reason why it was not that obvious to us.”

He added, “But we didn't want the game to be a piece of cake at the beginning like, you know, an interactive movie. That wasn't what we were aiming for. We definitely wanted to introduce at least some level of difficulty. I think the most common misunderstanding is that most people compare our 'normal difficulty' to other games' 'normal difficulty'.”

The game offers an Easy setting for those who just want to breeze through the combat elements and enjoy the story.

Tomasz Gop has also said that the team is mostly satisfied with how their game was received by reviewers and that they are watching even negative feedback for ideas on how they can make The Witcher 2 better.

The senior producer also confirmed that the team is working on a new patch for The Witcher 2 that should be launched this week, addressing most of the problems that gamers have reported so far.

Despite the difficulty spikes that pop up in certain spots The Witcher 2 is a very engaging experience, managing to blend a complex narrative with well-defined characters and a beautiful art style.
