Ubisoft is sending word that the expansion pack for World in Conflict, called Soviet Assault, is due to arrive in March, exclusively for the PC. The game is set to be offered via digital download for all those who already have an original copy of World in Conflict, while boxed copies will also be offered.

Fans who have not experienced the strategy title aiming to re-create the tactical engagements that would have happened if the Cold War had turned hot can also look forward to getting the World in Conflict: Complete Ediiton, which is set to include both the original game and the expansion.

John Parkes, who is the marketing director for Ubisoft EMEA, stated that “The team at Massive Entertainment worked hard to bring new and quality content to the World in Conflict brand. The fans have been eagerly awaiting Soviet Assault and Ubisoft is delighted to offer them this new content.”

The idea behind Soviet Assault is to show players how a Soviet Union on the brink of economic collapse decides, plans and then executes an all out assault on the United States and its European allies. The game is no Red Alert. All the units are real life military hardware the Soviets and the United States used in 1989, while the general gameplay favors flanking, coherent use of off map support (like artillery strikes and nukes) and a good eye for overall strategy. The campaign in Soviet Assult is set to offer new missions, ten cut scenes showing the Soviet military in action and characters. There are also fresh multiplayer maps implemented.

Initially, the Massive Entertainment developed expansion was set to be released by Vivendi but after the Activision Blizzard merger, the brand and its developer were put up for sale. Ubisoft picked them both up last summer and is only now announcing an actual release date for Soviet Assault.
