The next big game in Nintendo's hugely popular Legend of Zelda series, Skyward Sword, has reached the halfway mark in its development, according to a recent statement from franchise creator and legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

The new game was showcased back at the E3 conference this year, and Nintendo said that its development was going full Steam.

Now, Miyamoto, the creator of the series and the overseer of the new project, revealed that work on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was almost half-complete.

According to him, the team is working on creating new gameplay mechanics to make it feel more dense and satisfy people that are eager to try it out.

"What we are focused on is creating gameplay mechanics so the gameplay experience feels very dense," he said. "In fact, the overall experience is going to feel more dense. We hope that people will want to go back and replay the game once they finish it".

This is definitely some sad news for Zelda fans that were hoping to get their hands on the new game for the Nintendo Wii at the beginning of 2011.

Nintendo, for what it's worth, never committed to a release date, saying that it will release the game when it is complete and as close to perfection as possible.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will act as a prequel to the famous Ocarina of Time title in the same franchise, and use the new technologies implemented into the Nintendo Wii's peripherals, like the Wii Motion Plus, to deliver an enhanced experience.

The game was initially expected by fans at the end of this year, but Nintendo announced at this year's E3, alongside gameplay footage and a live demonstration by Miyamoto himself, that the title would appear sometime in 2011.

If Miyamoto and the development team are pleased with it, expect Skyward Sword to be launched around the end of next year, just before the holiday season.
