Fighting games have been making a comeback since the launch of Street Fighter IV by Capcom and the pinnacle of the current generation might be found in the upcoming two crossover games that will pit the Tekken and the Street Fighter universes one against another.

At the moment Tekken X Street Fighter is in the early stages of development and the team working on it is talking about how the unique play style of the series will evolve for the new installment.

Speaking to Siliconera at the EVO event Katsuhiro Harada, who is the producer of the Tekken series of fighting games at Namco Bandai, has said, “Street Fighter X Tekken was developed using four buttons and it plays similar to Street Fighter. For Tekken X Street Fighter, I want to keep it where players use left punch and right punch.”

He added, “Maybe we will have an alternate control system where the four buttons will have different functions, but we won’t add more buttons to the game.”

He also addressed the changes that might be made to some of the characters included in the video game saying that Ryu, who is traditionally a fighter that relies pretty much on projectile attacks, will probably get a new set of moves that allows him to close with opponents quicker in order to be able to stand up in a close quarter battle.

The developers also assured gamers that iconic elements like the “hadoukens” will remain unaffected by any change, mainly because the publisher wants to attract fans of both series.

The two games that combine the Tekken and the Street Figher franchises are interesting because they will use a lot of the same characters while shaping them to fit the unique play style that Capcom and Namco Bandai use.

Street Fighter X Tekken will be launched during the summer of 2012.
