Texas Instruments DLP Products announced today at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the release of nHD, a new addition to its DLP Pico suite of chipsets. According to the company, the new nHD solution is meant to enable the development of the thinnest, smallest DLP Pico engines available so far, and is expected to enter production availability in the second quarter of 2010. At the same time, the company notes that the new chip is meant to show DLP’s commitment to providing world-class performance, and to offer the possibility for projector technology to be included in new series of handsets.

The new nHD chipset is said to have been already included in the development of leading manufacturers around the world, as they can benefit from its size, brightness and resolution advantages in the development of embedded mobile phones, as well as on that of cameras and products in other mobile devices segments. Not to mention that manufacturers can benefit from increased flexibility with the new chipset, and with the success DLP’s WVGA and HVGA chips enjoy.

Among the features of the new DLP Pico solution, we can count: - nHD (640x360) resolution - Enables leading contrast ratio of better than 1,000:1 for the blackest blacks and most accurate whites - Enables true RGB LED wide color gamut for rich saturated colors - Improved power efficiency and electronic footprint - Incorporates a new low power Pico DPP2601/2607 ASIC/Processor - Enables a greater than 20 percent thinner optical module than WVGA chipset with full offset - Enables a greater than 50 percent smaller optical module volume than WVGA chipset with full offset

“We’re proud to welcome the new nHD chipset into the DLP Pico family,” said Frank Moizio, manager, DLP Emerging Markets business. “We believe this new nHD chipset sets new industry-leading benchmarks in pico projection - enabling products with the highest efficiency and brightness from the industry’s thinnest, smallest physical footprint. It achieves all of this with stunning picture quality. We believe nHD will provide even more opportunities for manufacturers to innovate with DLP.”

Manufacturers like Samsung, Optoma, LG and HP already showcased new pico projection products, and the company is also present at the MWC show in Barcelona to demonstrate the technology. The new nHD chip is expected to prove a great option for mobile phone makers, especially since they are considering the inclusion of DLP Pico projectors in ever-smaller devices.
