THQ and Games Workshop have announced that the license agreement covering the Warhammer 40,000 universe has been extended, with new games already being scheduled for release in the next couple of years.

THQ has been really developing the popular Warhammer 40,000 license, which was originally created by Games Workshop as a franchise of tabletop toys.

We've already seen quite a lot of video games based on it, with the most impressive being the Dawn of War real time strategy series for PCs, which, according to its publisher, THQ, has surpassed 6.5 million units sold.

Now, seeing as how the company already has two other big releases planned for the franchise, in the form of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online, THQ and Games Workshop have announced that their multi-year partnership has been extended.

"The complex, futuristic war-torn universe created by Games Workshop equipped THQ's award-winning development teams with the material to create one of the most loved PC franchises - Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War," said Brian Farrell, THQ president and CEO.

"Our envisioning of the Warhammer 40,000 universe will continue to grow with top quality games across all platforms, including the upcoming launches of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online."

Space Marine will mark a first for the series, as Relic Entertainment is working on bringing a third-person shooter to the franchise, which will appear not only for the PC, but also for consoles like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, this August.

At the same time, Vigil Games, the studio behind Darksiders, is working on Dark Millennium Online, a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the popular universe, after the lackluster Warhammer Online title that appeared from Relic Entertainment a couple of years ago.

The MMO is still in development, and is expect to go online around the end of 2012.
