Red Dawn revived

THQ is announcing that it plans to release a videogame called Homefront, scheduled to be launched for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC. The game is set to be developed by Kaos Studios and will have a unique story.

The narrative of the videogame will be created by John Milius, who has written the screenplay for such classic movies like Apocalypse Now!, in collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola, and Red Dawn, the 1984 movie that pitted adolescents against Russian invaders.

The story behind Homefront is pretty much the same as that behind Red Dawn, only this time, the Soviets are out of the picture. Following the economic collapse of the United States of America, the country gets invaded by the Army of North Korea. They occupy a certain amount of territory and the game puts the player in control of a resistance fighter who tries to defeat the North Koreans.

It seems that Homefront will feature a deep multiplayer, presumably pitting the American defenders against the North Korean invaders on a variety of maps. It's not clear whether THQ is also planning to introduce co operative play for the game.

Kaos Studios has already created the Frontlines: Fuel of War, a multiplayer-oriented shooter, which never gained a big audience but had pretty interesting mechanics. The team started by developing the well-known Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942.

David Votypka, design director at Kaos Studios, declared that “Homefront isn't about going to war on the other side of the world or battling aliens from another planet; it's about fighting foreign invaders in your own backyard and defending your right to live.”

Apparently, more of Homefront will be shown off by THQ at the E3 trade show next week. Let's see whether the publisher can offer some in game footage or just the standard cutscene trailer.
