It took T-Mobile USA several months to roll out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade for the G2 smartphone. Fortunately, those who still own one of these devices will continue to receive important software updates.

The carrier has just announced that it has started to deployed the next Android 2.3.4 Gingebread update for T-Mobile G2 devices.

According to T-Mobile USA, the update is pushed OTA (over-the-air) and will bring all G2 firmwares to version 2.16.531.5.

G2 owners who have yet to been notified about the update should wait until it's pushed onto their phones, as the carrier stated that the update will roll out to customers in waves over the coming weeks.

In addition, customers are advised against calling T-Mobile USA to receive the upgrade faster, at least until December 20, which is the timeline for receiving the update.

The update cannot be pushed or downloaded manually unless the customer is notified about the availability of the software update, claims T-Mobile USA.

However, G2 owners can manually check if the update is available for their phones, even if they haven't been notified.

Simply head over to Settings menu by pressing the Menu key, and click on the About Phone option, and then tap System Update.

Aside bringing the software version to Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, the update provides the following improvements:

- Google Security Patch; - Google Skymap improvements; - Battery life improvements; - Data connection while roaming domestically.

There haven't been any reported issues with the update, so we can assume that users can safely download and install the latest Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread upgrade.

Although there's no telling if the device will receive any further software updates, T-Mobile G2 meets the minimum hardware requirements for the Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

Feel free to leave your comments below, in case you are one of the lucky T-Mobile G2 owners that received the update.
