Paradox Interactive has announced that its mysterious third in-house video game development team is working on a title called Sengoku, a grand strategy game which is set in the 15th century in Feudal Japan and allows gamers to control a powerful samurai family as it rises to greatness and defeats its enemies.

The game starts in 1467 as Japan is gripped by civil war because the Ashikga Shoguns are no longer able to guide the nation.

The gamer will take control of one clan and guide it from humble beginnings to a position where it is able to capture the title of Shogun for itself and defend it against other pretenders.

The developers at Paradox Interactive are promising a detailed historical map of Japan during the period, with a lot of province and important landmarks included.

The gameplay will focus both on brute force, with samurai powered armies clashing on battlefields to determine which faction gains honor and which loses it, but the players can also use diplomacy to forge alliances and get ahead and shadowy means, like the feared ninja, in order to limit the progress of its enemies.

The developers are also saying that the game is similar to Crusader Kings, one of the most overlooked and more ambitious games, meaning that the game will focus on characters, on their abilities and on their ambitions, with the successful gamer needing to be as adept at social relations as he is at grand strategy.

Members of the same family might fight each other in the game and making sure that each character gets the position he is best suited for is crucial for success.

The people at Paradox Interactive say that Sengoku will be more detailed and more engaging than the Divine Wind expansion for Europea Universalis III, which also focused on the Eastern powers.
