LucasArts is announcing that it intends to publish a new game in the Battlefront series, based on Star Wars. The title will be called Elite Squadron and will be released for the PlayStation Portable from Sony and for the Nintendo DS. Although no exact date has been offered, the game should arrive this fall.

Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron is set to tell the story of two very different, yet very similar Clone Troopers. One of the X2 was created from the DNA of a powerful Jedi Master so that he can better hunt Jedi all over the galaxy as part of the infamous Order 66.

After being forced to come face to face with evil, X2 decides that his capabilities will never again be used to hurt people and wishes to join the growing Rebellion in order to topple the Empire. Unfortunately, X1, the main character’s brother, is also Force sensitive and has no moral restraints. The developer promises “a confrontation that could determine the fate of both the Empire and the Rebellion.”

The major gameplay innovation of Elite Squadron is that players can fight at multiple levels for each scenario. They can exchange fire in capital ships, dogfight in lighter craft, fight on foot or command a variety of other vehicles. The different combat planes influence each other and the player will need to make sure that he/she watches all of them to reach victory. Fighting will take place on planets like Hoth, Yavin 4 and Endor.

The PSP version of the game is set to allow the player a huge level of control over his/her character, with customization options ranging from weapons to species and overall appearance. The Nintendo DS version of Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron will feature classes that can use predetermined weapons, from blasters to lightsabers. Both versions of the videogame will support multiplayer, with 16 players joining in on the PSP and four players engaged on the Nintendo DS.
