Star Trek Online, the MMO based around the well-known television universe, has faced an uphill struggle ever since it was released and met with mixed reactions from gamers, but it seems that the developers have big plans for 2011.

Their plans, revealed via a pretty lengthy Questions & Answers session on the official site, include delivering more ships for players to acquire and use, more content episodes with unique stories and more options to travel around the galaxy.

On the topic of ships, Dan Stahl, who is the executive producer working on Star Trek Online, has said, “The ship design team is doing some early R&D on how a Prometheus design would work. This is one example where we are looking at an existing top tier ship and designing ways to make it even more unique.”

He added, “As far as other Vulcan ships, we plan to continue introducing species based ships and while I don’t have the Suurok on the schedule, we do have an Andorian ship on the schedule coming up soon. So stay tuned.”

Future seasons of the game, which are akin to expansions, might also allow gamers to acquire specific traits for their ships while also adding more interior areas that can be explored at leisure.

Stahl has also talked about allowing gamers to reboot their experiences, saying, ”I'm still a big fan of being able to "re-species" your character which would allow you to re-trait them as well. We are in need of some core software support to make this a reality, but I hope to see it someday, so the chances are good.”

Star Trek Online is an MMO developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Atari.

The two companies have just announced that another MMO, Champions Online, would adopt the free-to-play model on January 25.
