Remember that back at MWC 2014 in February, Sony took the opportunity to launch its next-gen tablet, the Xperia Z2 Tablet, but since then the slate has been up for grabs in just a few markets, including the UK.

But after seeing the slate pass through the FCC not so long ago, the time has come for Sony to announce the availability of the tablet on the US market, as well.

So, for those of you who have been considering getting your hands on Sony’s latest flagship slate, you should know the device is expected to drop on May 4 with a price tag of $499 / €362 if we’re talking about the 16GB version, reports Slashgear.

If you think you need more space, you can opt for the 32GB variant too, but that will set you back with a hefty $599.99 / €435.

Note, that the models outlined above are only Wi-Fi variants, as Sony does not offer the Z2 tablet with integrated LTE. However, the version we saw go through the FCC had AT&T LTE in tow, so we can expect US carriers to pick the slate up any time now and offer it for sale.

For those of you who didn't get a chance to do a little reading on the tablet, you should know the Xperia Z2 Tablet is the successor of the Xperia Tablet Z that was launched a year ago at MWC.

Sony likes to make big claims, so it advertises the tablet as the “world’s slimmest and lightest waterproof tablet” and this might just be right as the new slate is only 6.9mm / 0.27 inches thick and weighs 426 g / 439 g – 0.93 / 0.96 lbs depending on whether we’re talking about the Wi-Fi or 3G/LTE model.

The new Xperia Z2 Tablet has a 10.1-inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 Triluminos display bundling Sony’s new Live color LED tech. This new system blends red and green phosphor with blue LEDs in order to produce a bright, uniform light.

A 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor lies under the bonnet, combined with a hefty 3GB of RAM.

Other notable feats you can expect to see the tablet arrive with include Sony’s Front Surround dynamic audio, noise canceling tech (it will reportedly block up to 98% of ambient noise when used in combination with noise cancelling headphones), plus a neat Wireless Controller so users can pair the tablet with a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 controller.
