As expected, Sony Mobile and Rogers have finally launched the Xperia ion in Canada. The LTE-enabled smartphone is now available for purchase for as low as $49.99 CAD with a new 3-year agreement.

However, folks who do not want to commit to a long-term contract can buy the Xperia ion for $499.99 CAD outright.

The smartphone can be paired with Rogers’ promotional 6 GB Super Plan, which is available for customers until August 8.

Those who choose this promo will have to pay $60 CAD monthly for which they will get the following: 6 GB of mobile data, unlimited MY10 Canada-Wide, Unlimited Messaging, Unlimited 6PM Evenings & Weekends, Unlimited Canada-Wide Calling from Your Computer with Rogers One Number and 200 Weekday Minutes.

Sony Xperia ion was announced back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but the Japanese company delayed the launch of the smartphone for unknown reasons.

Today, the handset finally makes its way onto the shelves, though it appears to be outdated when it comes to software, the Xperia ion is pretty impressive when it comes to hardware.

The smartphone is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon processor, which is complemented by an Adreno 220 GPU and 1GB of RAM.

There’s also 16GB of internal memory inside, which can be further expanded up to 32GB via microSD memory card. Another selling point of the Xperia ion is the impressive 12-megapixel camera on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording.

The hyper-vibrant 4.55-inch LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen is another strong point of the handset. The display supports HD (720 x 1280 pixels) resolution and features Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine technology.

Those who wish to purchase Rogers Xperia ion, but are having second thoughts because of the outdated operating system, should know that Sony plans to push an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade very soon.
