Sony has once again talked about the next generation of home consoles and how it currently has no plans concerning a so-called PlayStation 4, mainly because developers still have lots of power left in the current PS3 and because gamers are still entertained by the device in a wide range of ways.

Many games industry pundits are calling for new consoles to be released, as Microsoft and Sony should certainly follow Nintendo, which is launching its Wii U device next year on the market.

Sony isn't in a hurry, however, as it has once again confirmed its stance on a PlayStation 4 through the voice of its Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, who talked with Eurogamer.

"Looking at the platform cycle, when the platform becomes something game developers are not able to improve their creations with, that's the time we have to really seriously consider shifting to the next generation," Yoshida said. "As far as we are concerned, we have no desire now to do that [release a new home console]."

The Sony executive did admit that gamers always want new sorts of experiences and more impressive games, but emphasized that, with developers slowly getting used to using the whole power of the PlayStation 3 and while new things are being made for the PlayStation Move, that desire for new experiences is more than satisfied.

"Gamers always need something new and more exciting. If they're seeing just similar types of games coming year after year, they will quickly lose their interest," noted Yoshida. "Looking like that, when you see games coming out on PS3, both the traditional type of games as well as new kind of games using PS Move, there is a lot more we can do from the game development standpoint."

"So as long as we and our developers can create new experiences that are more exciting to consumers, I see no need to transition into newer generation."

Sony released earlier statements, saying that the PlayStation 3 is still halfway through its lifecycle, so a PS4 isn't being planned just yet, at least. Rumors, on the other hand, deem a PlayStation 4 announcement as certain to arrive next year.
