Its first Windows phone

Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson announced on Wednesday the launch of its first mobile phone powered by Microsoft's upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. According to the company, the handset is set to provide users with great email and multimedia features, while also including powerful communication capabilities. In addition to fast syncing of mail and calendar, the XPERIA X2 also comes with support for Microsoft Office Mobile documents.

For what it's worth, Sony Ericsson has been rumored for quite some time to plan on releasing a successor of its Windows Mobile-based XPERIA X1, and it seems that the company finally decided to announce it officially.

The features list of the new Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 includes SlideView, with fast access to contacts, messages, media and more, as well as the already popular XPERIA panels, 14 of which come preloaded with the device, with 16 more available for download. Users will enjoy panels like Skype, Mytopia, Google, games, CNN and Windows Live, along with an enhanced touch interface and new 3D signature panel.

“In the fast moving world we live in, the need to stay connected has never been so important.” said Sumit Malhotra, marketing business manager, Sony Ericsson. “We constantly rely on our mobile phones as an extension to the office and the XPERIA X2 debuting with Windows Mobile 6.5, allows users to work quickly and efficiently while on the move. The XPERIA X2 also features a new range of interactive panels as well as SlideView, which provides quick access to frequently used phone activities – perfect for those who need to see any missed incoming activity at a glance.”

The specifications list of the new Windows phone shows a 3.2-inch touchscreen display that boasts a 480 x 800 pixel (WVGA) resolution and support for 65,536 colors, an 8.1-megapixel photo snapper that features Auto focus, Geo tagging, Image stabilizer and Video recording capabilities, Bluetooth stereo (A2DP), Sony Ericsson media player, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, Handwriting recognition, Video streaming capabilities, TV out, USB port, Wi-Fi connectivity, A-GPS, up to 110MB of internal memory and a microSD / microSDHC memory card slot with support for up to 16GB of additional storage space.

The XPERIA X2 measures 110 x 54 x 16 mm and weighs 115 grams. Its battery can provide up to 10 hours of talk time or up to 500 hours of standby time on GSM networks and up to 6 hours of talk time or up to 640 hours of standby time on UMTS networks. In addition, the device should also deliver up to 20 hours of music playback time. The connectivity options XPERIA X2 comes with include GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS/HSPA 850/1900/2100 and UMTS/HSPA 900/1900/2100. According to the maker, the new Windows phone will become available for purchase in select markets starting with the fourth quarter of 2009, while sporting two color options, Elegant Black and Modern Silver.
