Smaller versions of Xperia X10

Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson announced officially at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the launch of two new handsets, the Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro, both of which are pushed to the market as the compact versions of its high-end Xperia X10, powered by Google's Android operating system. According to the company, the two devices are meant to deliver all the high-end features of X10 and the company's powerful UX platform on smaller devices.

The Xperia X10 mini pro will hit the market with slide out QWERTY keyboards, so as to enhance the communication experience delivered to users, while also including the Sony Ericsson Timescape application that debuted on Xperia X10, and which is available with Xperia X10 mini too. Through this solution, users will be able to put all of their communications into a single place, including text messages, missed calls, and Facebook and Twitter updates. Moreover, they will be able to pull together music content from the music store and YouTube via the “infinite button.”

“There has been an enormous buzz around Xperia X10 so it is really exciting to be already unveiling compact versions of this powerful proposition,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, EVP and chief creation officer, Sony Ericsson. “With the X10 mini and X10 mini pro we have pushed the boundaries of what is possible with smaller devices and are giving consumers exactly what they want; two high performance mobile phones with a fully customisable user experience platform and a stunning ultra-compact design.”

The specifications list of the two new Android phones from Sony Ericsson includes a 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU, 2.55-inch touchscreen display that boasts a 240 x 320 pixel resolution, a 5-megapixel photo snapper with auto focus and video recording, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and micro USB connectivity options, along with a 3.5 mm audio jack, A-GPS, 128MB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 16GB of additional storage space, FM radio, and support for Email, SMS, MMS and IM, as well as for Gmail, Google Maps with Street View, Google Talk, Google Voice Search, YouTube and Android Market.

According to the company, the X10 mini and X10 mini pro come with support for HSPA 900/2100 and EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, HSPA 850/1900/2100 and EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies, and are expected to become available for purchase in the second quarter of the ongoing year. X10 mini measures 83 x 50 x 16 mm, it weighs in at 88 grams and should land in Pearl White, Black, Pink, Lime, Red and Silver color versions. X10 mini pro measures 90 x 52 x 17 mm, weighs 120 grams, and should become available in Black and Red. Both handsets are powered by Android 1.6.
