Thinks Microsoft is bribing developers

Maybe the biggest announcement to come out of Microsoft's E3 presentation was the fact that the long awaited Final Fantasy XIII, developed by Square Enix, is no longer a PlayStation 3 exclusive. The game will also be launched on Microsoft's own Xbox 360 and there's even some talk that the developers have an agreement with the
Redmond based company to create some exclusive content for the version of the game that comes to the Xbox 360.

Sony's Jack Tretton has hit back at the software giant and direct rival by saying that he believes Microsoft spends much of the money it pumps into game development "trying to curry favor with third parties". It's obvious that the reference was made in relation to Final Fantasy XIII, but clearly the Sony man was also thinking about the promise from Rockstar for exclusive DLC for the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV, which Microsoft pushed really hard in its marketing campaign for the game.

Teretton seemed to imply that Square Enix did not believe a cross platform launch for their game would bring significantly better sales or better exposure for the company. The main reason behind the decision was most likely a pay out from Microsoft. Tretton contrasted this with the emphasis that his company, Sony, puts on internal development of titles that are exclusive to the PS3. He said that this path, that of internal development, was the one that major publishers should favor.

Tretton further stated that "I think software companies look and say 'there's no check big enough for us to do exclusive development' ...I think it's going to be harder and harder to have third-party exclusives as we move forward". This does not bode well for Sony, which has been focusing on attracting titles that are exclusive to the PlayStation 3 in an effort to boost sales and create a larger player base for its console.

erm, so what he's saying is Sony didn't bribe Square to a reasonable figure this time? Just like they couldn't afford to bribe rockstar for GTAIV exclusive this time around?

Teretton is an utter hypocrite...
