It happens with every celebrity scandal: you’re not to believe everything that you see (or hear) online. After video of Solange Knowles viciously attacking Jay Z in an elevator after the MET Gala 2014, while sister Beyonce looked on, emerged online, a tweet apparently from Solange also started making the rounds.

It conveniently seemed to offer an explanation straight from the horse’s mouth on what started the fight that’s gotten so many fans intrigued: Solange attacked Jay Z because he’d hit Beyonce first.

“He tried the right one. I keep tell yall that [N-word] ain’t bout that life. u hit my sis I hit u [expletive]. talk what you know! y’all don’t know [expletive],” the tweet read.

The reason it seemed so convincing wasn’t just because it appeared to have come from Solange’s official Twitter, but also because it explained why Beyonce didn’t move a muscle to calm spirits down and get her sister to stop attacking her husband. Why would she defend him if he’d hit her first, right?

Well, a rep for Solange tells TMZ that the tweet is not genuine, saying, “I can confirm that Solange did not tweet that; that is not a real tweet.” A screencap of the tweet is above, courtesy of the same media outlet.

Video of the altercation is embedded below: you can see Solange punching, kicking, and hitting Jay with her purse before she’s restrained by the bodyguard who, according to reports, is punching buttons desperately trying to get the elevator to brake, lest someone witnessed this scene when the doors opened.

Towards the end of the video, Beyonce positions herself between Jay and Solange, even though she continues to make no obvious sign that she’s trying to make the fighting stop. Then, as Solange attacks Jay once more before the doors open, she intervenes and says something to her husband, who calms down and walks out of the elevator.

After this violent episode, the rapper made his way straight to the waiting car, while a furious Solange hitched another ride. Beyonce, still apparently unfazed, put on her best smile and even stopped to wave to the crowd and to pose for pictures to the paparazzi.

The reason for Solange’s violent outburst is almost as intriguing as Beyonce’s ability to feign composure under these circumstances. This would explain why so many people online took the tweet above for a real one: it would have solved at least one mystery.
