Says that Call of Duty might move back to the setting this year

Sniper Elite V2 is set during World War II, one of the most explored areas of history when it comes to video games, but the development team at Rebellion believes that it is the right time to explore the setting once again.

Steve Hart, the senior producer working on Sniper Elite V2 at Rebellion, told GamerZines that, “I think the market is ready for World War II. You’ve seen the extra press the likes of Red Orchestra 2 have gotten because all of a sudden WWII is a breath of fresh air whereas modern conflicts perhaps aren’t.”

He added, “I wouldn’t say developers moved on, instead they gave it the respect it needed and said ‘Right, we’ve done that to death, let’s go look at something else’. It just so happens that our timing for a World War II game is better than others out there, and gamers are ready for that now.”

The developer is of the opinion that the most successful first-person shooter of the last few years, Call of Duty from publisher Activision Blizzard, will soon be returning to World War II, possibly as soon as this year, and it is a good idea for Sniper Elite V2 to launch before that moment.

Activision confirmed that a new Call of Duty would be launched during 2012, but the company did not say which setting the game might use and what developer would create it.

The new Sniper Elite game will use the same main character as the first installment, Karl Fairburne, and gamers will control the OSS agent as he explores areas of Germany and takes out enemies silently and from afar.

Sniper Elite V2 is set to be launched during May, with 505 Games serving as the publisher, and will be playable on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC.
