Many women and men are dealing with the problem of the unaesthetic dark circles under the eyes. While for the former, a short-term solution can be found in a good concealer, this is not tackling the problem to its roots. One reason for dark circles could be seasonal allergies, as Men’s Health points out, and this is precisely where we should start treatment for them.

According to the magazine, seasonal allergies can come with plenty of nasty side-effects, aside from the ones we already know, like sneezing, coughing and a stuffy nose. In some people, these allergies can also manifest by nasal congestion, which, as the mag explains, leads to the blood flow to back up under the eyes creating the dark circles and occasional puffiness. Therefore, the solution is to treat the allergy and the nose congestion to treat the dark circles.

“Allergies trigger nasal congestion and, in turn, nasal congestion causes blood flow to back up in the area under the eyes. The skin under the eye is very thin, so backed-up blood flow in the venous system under the eye is visible as a dark shadow or circle. Sometimes this symptom is associated with chronic sinusitis or chronic nasal blockage as well as allergies.” Men’s Health says.

To treat nasal congestion, over the counter nasal medicine might work just fine. However, the mag points out, if the problem is more serious, then a visit to the doctor should be next on our priorities list, to have a thorough checkup performed and get some prescription drugs for the condition. There is, of course, the option of avoiding the allergen altogether as well, granted we know what’s making us sick. If that is not the case, then we can also try some of the many home remedies that have been tried and proved countless times over the past.

One of these would be applying cold compresses on the eyes at least three or four times a day for just a couple of minutes. For even better results, sliced cucumbers are also highly recommended, as they constrict the blood vessels and, thus, minimize darkness.
