A few weeks ago, a 26-year-old turtle conservationist named Jairo Mora Sandoval was brutally murdered by poachers in Costa Rica. Green-oriented group Sea Shepherd has decided to honor the conservationist by naming their newly acquired ship after him.

Writing on his Facebook page, Captain Paul Watson said that “Sea Shepherd UK has acquired a new addition to the Sea Shepherd fleet to be named the Jairo Mora Sandoval in honour of the 26 year old sea turtle conservationist who was murdered last month at Playa Moin beach on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.”

“We do not want the name of this courageous and passionate young man to be forgotten and hopefully this will help to keep his memory alive,” Captain Paul Watson added.

Should things go as planned, the ship will be unveiled this coming August, Mongabay reports.

Paul Watson is determined to see the men responsible for Jairo Mora Sandoval’s death arrested and made to pay for their crimes.

Because of this, he is offering a $30,000 (€23,000) reward to whomever helps authorities in Costa Rica catch the people that killed the turtle activist.

“I have also offered $30,000 in cash as a reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his murder,” the Captain wrote on Facebook.

Several other green-oriented groups have also announced that they are offering $56,000 (€42,068) to the person who is willing to step forward and make it easier for the police to get their hands on Jairo's murderers.

As previously reported, Jairo Mora Sandoval was kidnapped by at least five suspected turtle poachers on May 31. The people who took him first tortured and then executed him.

Due to the fact that the activist's killers were wearing masks when they attacked him and four of his friends, witnesses are unable to offer any information that could help the police make head and tail of this murder case.
