14 DAY TRIAL // Scythe has just announced the introduction of its third version of the popular Universal Retention Kit, the new kit featuring some enhancements, when compared to the previous model, as well as improved multi-socket compatibility for both AMD and Intel motherboards.
The kit is designed to be used as an alternative to push pins and other lower pressure retention mechanisms, or as a replacement for incomplete or damaged mounting systems.
As a result, the kit is compatible with a wide range of sockets from both camps, including Intel Socket T/LGA775, LGA 1156, LGA 1366, and the brand-new socket LGA 1155, as well as AMD's 754, 939, AM2, AM2+, AM3 and 940 sockets.
In addition, the backplate that is shipped together with the system, is compatible with various motherboard models and allows for firm contact pressure between the cooler base and the CPU's heatspreader.
In the retail package, users will also find a new retention bracket of AMD mainboards.
Compared to regular Brackets that are made out of plastic, Scythe's one is crafted out of solid steel and thereby provides additional sturdiness, even when large high-end coolers are installed.
Another interesting accessory that made its way inside the box is a push pin removal tool that is designed to ease their detachment.
Everybody that installed a high end push pin cooler surely knows how difficult this task can prove to be.
However, such systems are still employed by a wide range of CPU cooler manufacturers, a really strange decision considering the low mounting pressure generated by this type of retention mechanism.
Although it doesn't sound all that problematic, a low mount pressure can lead to higher than normal temperatures and an overall noisier computer experience.
