Photokina is not only an event where the most important names in digital photography showcase their products, but it's also a very good opportunity for memory card makers to announce new and improved models, designed for the various camera segments out there. We've seen yesterday some pretty interesting announcements from Lexar and Pretec, and now it's time for SanDisk to come out with a little something of its own, namely an upgrade to the Extreme IV CompactFlash series, which now boast increased access speeds, as well as enhanced storage capacities.

First of all, the company upgraded the speeds of all the previous models from the Extreme IV CF series, the cards now being able to reach 45MB/s (or 300X). Then, it has also introduced a whole new model, which benefits from the speed upgrade and also offers a large amount of storage space, namely 16 GB.

All the SanDisk Extreme IV CompactFlash memory cards are fully compatible with all CompactFlash cameras including the latest UDMA-enabled ones. Due to their fast access time, the SanDisk Extreme IV CF cards are supposed to help reduce the delay between shots, enabling photographers to take more photos overall. Plus, faster data transfer speeds between cameras (or card readers) and computers translate into an improved workflow.

According to the company's own statement, these new high-capacity, high-performance SanDisk Extreme IV CompactFlash cards are just the thing for professional photographers who generally shoot photos in RAW or RAW + JPG formats, which require up to ten times more card capacity than JPG images. However, this increase in both storage and speed can also prove to be welcomed by photographers who regularly use burst or continuous shooting modes.

The 16GB SanDisk Extreme IV CompactFlash memory card is immediately available and will retail for around 400 dollars in the US. The price of the lower-capacity models that have also received a speed upgrade are of $119.99 for the 4GB version and $239.99 for the 8GB variant.
