South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung is reportedly gearing up for the release of a new flavor of its just launched GALAXY Tab 8.9, namely one that would sport 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) connectivity capabilities.

GALAXY Tab 8.9 is the latest addition to the company's family of tablet PCs, boasting an 8.9-inch touchscreen display, a dual-core application processor, and Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system.

The new device was unveiled on Tuesday during the CTIA Wireless expo in Orlando, Florida, and should become available for purchase in summer.

Apparently, in addition to the usual 3G and WiFi-only versions of the tablet PC, Samsung would also plan the near launch of a 4G-capable flavor.

This does not come too much as a surprise, that's for sure, especially since the company already unveiled plans to release a Galaxy Tab (7-inch) model with LTE connectivity capabilities.

According to some of the latest rumors around the Internet, Samsung would plan on packing the new GALAXY Tab 8.9 device with support for the LTE technology used in the Nordic countries (the 2.6GHz bands, used in other countries as well).

Since no official confirmation emerged on this for the time being, there are also some suggesting that the company might have packed the device with 800MHz bands, which are already used in some European countries, and should be deployed in even more of them.

Of course, there is also the possibility that the new GALAXY Tab 8.9 would offer support for both frequencies, which would make it fit for the networks of more carriers.

The company reportedly confirmed that it plans on making the new device available for purchase sometime in the second half of the ongoing year.

Until more info on this emerges, we should note that the new device is touted as the slimmest mobile tablet in the world, at only 8.6 millimeters, and that it is matched only by another Samsung device, the GALAXY Tab 10.1, which was unveiled on Tuesday as well.

This is the second GALAXY Tab 10.1 version that Samsung introduced, following a flavor launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which should land on shelves in April, dubbed GALAXY Tab 10.1v.
