Earlier this month, Samsung, one of the world's leading vendors of consumer electronics and computer products, announced the introduction of its new, ultraportable hard drives, boasting a 2.5-inch form factor and a 640GB storage capacity. On that note, the company has just announced the expansion of its Spinpoint series, with a new, 2.5-inch model that will provide notebook users with an option for a larger capacity, 640GB hard drive. Part of the company's Spinpoint M7 internal hard disk drive series, the new solution boasts an areal density of 516-Gigabit per square inch, with 320GB of space on each platter.

“With the addition of the new internal drive to the M7 series, our customers will get the best viable combination of density, performance and reliability that is essential for high-end notebooks and mobile applications,” C.H. Lee, vice president, Storage sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics, said. “Samsung maximizes the density level of its platters to enhance the reliability and stability of its internal hard drives.”

Samsung's new M7 series of 2.5-inch internal hard drives comes with a more energy-efficient design, boasting just two platters that deliver a 28-percent increase in storage capacity, per platter, compared with the company's previous generation, 500GB model. The drive offers a shock resistance level of 400G (2ms) in operation mode and of 900G (1ms) when the power is off, according to Samsung. In addition, the drive is also featured with the company's own SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies, consequently providing a minimized noise level during the drive operation.

The Samsung Spinpoint M7 series is available in capacities of 160-, 250-, 320-, 500- and 640-GB, providing users with a wide choice for upgrading their notebook's storage solution. The drives boast a low 5400RPM platter speed, a 3 Gbps SATA interface coupled with Native Command Queuing and 8MB of cache memory. Price-wise, the new drive will start shipping with an MSRP of US$149.99.
