Mobile phone carrier U.S. Cellular has just announced the launch of a new Android-based smartphone on its airwaves, namely the Samsung Gem. The new device is already available for purchase on the carrier's website with a price tag of $29.99 attached to it, after an $80 mail-in rebate.

Powered by Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, Samsung Gem sports a wide range of appealing features, starting with the 3.2-inch full touchscreen display, with advanced anti-scratch, anti-smudge and anti-reflective protective glass.

The new mobile phone would offer users the possibility to stay in touch with their friends and family in a simple manner, the wireless carrier announced.

Through Samsung Gem, users can easily update their status and post photos and messages to favorite social networking sites, all through the simple touch of a button.

Moreover, the handset would offer an easy-to-use calendar, so that users could keep their social and business lives organized. It would also enable them place widgets on the homescreen for increased personalization and fast access to various features.

“We want to delight our customers with handsets that can be customized to meet their individual needs,” said David Kimbell, vice president of marketing for U.S. Cellular.

“As the interest in smartphones continues to grow, we are thrilled to roll out high-performing, competitively priced devices that enable our customers to be more productive and simplify their lives.”

The mobile phone carrier also announced that the new device is available for its customers backed by its high-speed nationwide network, as well as by the The Belief Project (the latter received the Frost & Sullivan's Customer Value Enhancement of the Year Award).

“The Belief Project recognizes customer loyalty with unmatched benefits and rewards like faster upgrades to the coolest phones in as little as 10 months without requiring customers to repeatedly sign contracts,” the carrier explains.

“It also offers an assortment of bundled National Single Line and Family Belief Plans designed to mirror the way people use their phones,” the company continues.
