Talk of a second and possibly third “Avatar” film has been around ever since the first one dropped in cinemas late last year, but no report has ever been confirmed officially. At the beginning of this month, Sigourney Weaver was saying she had been asked to return for the sequel, despite the fact that her character died in the film. Now, it’s Sam Worthington’s turn to get fans guessing again, as NBC can confirm.

NBC recently caught up with the star who is busy promoting both the DVD release of “Avatar” and his upcoming project, “Clash of the Titans.” Though he would not – and probably could not either – go into specifics, the Aussie revealed that director James Cameron thought of the story in “Avatar” as requiring 3 films to tell. What this means is that there will be a sequel at least, a fact also determined by the incredible reception the film got.

If the second movie also goes well, then there will also be a threequel, Worthington stated. “Jim had an arc for three. Three’s a great number. It’s the number you want to do. But we didn’t even know we’d go into a second one until [‘Avatar’ was] fully embraced. The fact that it got embraced so quickly and so amazingly, which is mind blowing for all of us, means an audience wouldn’t mind going back to Pandora with us. But if you do the second one and it’s terrible, you don’t do the third one. It all depends on the audience. That’s why you make movies,” Sam said for the aforementioned media outlet.

One thing is certain: if Cameron does decide to start working on “Avatar 2” (and chances are high he will), then fans are in for the surprise of their life because it will be bigger and better than the original film. “With any undertaking, and the manpower and time that it takes to make that kind of movie, Jim’s got to find the challenge. He’s got to push the bar again. He’s the man who raises the bar, dares everyone to jump over it and gives you the courage to jump over it, but he’s got the find the challenge for himself,” Worthington further explained.

Until more on the second “Avatar” is made official, fans of the Australian actor can keep an eye out for him in “Clash of the Titans,” which promises to be a box office hit. The film arrives in theaters on April 12.
