The carrier might launch the new iPhone 4S in a few days

Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is expected to make a new iPhone model available for purchase on its airwaves as soon as this week, some of the latest reports on the matter suggest.

In a recent article, macgasm notes that the wireless carrier has asked for ‘unlimited overtime’ at its call centers, which suggests that there might be a big launch set to take place.

The info comes from a source that has knowledge of that happening only at some call centers in Salt Lake City, but chances are that other locations are also involved.

Clearly, this means that something big might arrive on that day, and all seems to point at the upcoming availability of the new iPhone.

However, these are the only pieces of info available on the matter for the time being, and there is no telling on whether the rumor will actually pan out or not.

Provided that they do, there is a strong possibility that Verizon will be launching the iPhone 4S model this week, though iPhone 5 might not be out of the question either.

Some suggested recently that Sprint might have scored an exclusive deal with Apple for the release of new the iPhone 5 model on its airwaves with support for WiMAX connectivity.

The rumor also continues by saying that carriers like AT&T and Verizon, which already have the iPhone available for their customers, will not be getting the iPhone 5 until next year.

Instead, they will receive the less powerful iPhone 4S model this year, a refresh for last year's iPhone 4 device. The new device might be cheaper than the iPhone 5, and should pack global connectivity capabilities.

While nothing was confirmed on any of these rumors, chances are that all will be officially unveiled no later than today.

Apple is expected to make the official announcement on the new iPhone model, whichever that would be, during a press conference set for today, so stay tuned for more on the matter.
